      Practicum Report

      Darrensites.Pro Clients

I was tasked to create documentation using Word for fourteen website clients for this company. I accomplished this in two parts. I was first given screenshots of all the plugins with each site and then later given all the pages and posts of each website. I had to include in the documentation the styles and branding elements with hex codes for colors, typography, and the logo. The company can now efficiently keep records of changes with a change log heading. This took me five hours.logo

      Learning WordPress

Within my WordPress dashboard I learned the functionality of each object to manipulate my website: Posts- to create blog posts, Media- this holds the image library of the website, Pages- to create different pages, Comments- where I can check on comments that where given to a post, Projects- where I can make sample webpages, Appearance- I can design the theme that is loaded within the website, Plugins- I can upload, delete and update the plugins, Users- I can assign various people with special permission levels, LLA- Analytics of attempts to access the site without my permission, Tools- Here a can check on the website's health, Settings- This is for media upload sizes, permalinks, and engagement with subscribers, Divi Supreme Pro- Often a plugin will place a shortcut onto the dashboard. This one is an upgrade for the Divi Modules, Divi- the theme/page builder used on my website. This took five hours.

      I Purchased my Name

It was suggested by my practicum facilitator, Darren Oates, to investigate whether my real name Dann R. Murphy, was unique and could be bought as my private domain. I made an account at GoDaddy.com and tried dannmurphy.com, and it was available. Using that domain, we created this website, which is editable, and I can create business pages to obtain clients or pages to acquire employment. This took two hours.

      Elegantthemes.com

The page builder is implemented by uploading the Divi Theme as you would a plugin. Once installed, it gave me the ability to start a section and, within that section, a row and then divide the row into columns, one to two, three, and so on. Once columns are chosen, the availability of picking modules is assessed. This gave me the ability to place expressive elements such as this tab module You can view the many modules HERE. This took this two hours.divi modules

New Landing Pages for NuVision Homes

Implemeting the landing pages involved a client called NuVision Homes.
This particular client wanted three landing pages, for Clarion PA, Ford City PA, and Kittaning PA. This involved duplicating the main home page in the Divi Builder and changing the title tags from "painter" to "house painter" to empasise that they paint houses rather than artistic painting, for Seach Engine Optimization. On each new landing page, there were four instances of the specific area that needed to be updated for each page. This took two hours.

      Client Acquisition Process

To create a client acquisition process, Mr. Oates ran me through his first so I could get a feel to how this process should go. After getting a call from a prospective lead, I will issue them an intake form to target their business and learn the broad strokes of what their business will need. I will also ask them questions to learn what their technical skills are and if they already have their own domain. This will facilitate less time during a face-to-face/video meeting. After receiving the completed intake form, I will construct the Statement of Work (SOW). The SOW will be able to be edited by both parties specifically within the scope. I will then request a good faith deposit to start the work. This took 4 1/2 hours.

      My Hobby Page

Creating this page was a bit more difficult since I was on my own, almost entirely. Thinking of what to put on that page was pretty easy, but figuring out how to display it wasn't. Originally, I wanted to upload the video directly to my website, but Divi wouldn't allow me to because the file was too large. So, I uploaded it to YouTube as a privated video and fed the link to Divi. All the other images were already drawn, by me, so all I had to do was upload those too. This took me five hours.

      My Portfolio Page

To create my portfolio, I needed to do some work. Unfortunately, its not that easy. But Mr. Oates had an idea, in the WordPress backend, there's a Projects tab. In that tab, I could create singular pages where I could use the Divi Visual Builder and show that I know how to make websites of various kinds. I obtained all of my imagery for these from royalty free sources. This took me 6 hours and 25 minutes.

      UTM, DNS and CRM

      • UTM - Urchin Tracking Module

We went over the implimentation of UTM tracking data in the use of URLs. These URLs can be used for advertisement campaigns and track website traffic from different touch points.

      • DNS Transfer in GoDaddy - Domain Name Server

Mr. Oates showed me how to edit a DNS record for a client's domain in GoDaddy so I can build, edit and configure their website. This involved changing or placing the hosting server IP to my hosting IP as the domain may be parked or hosted elsewhere.

      • CRM - Customer Relationship Management

Mr. Oates added me as a user at a specific permission level on Brevo to help manage his clients. This will involve updating and sending invoices to clients.

      Code Editor

In the back end of WordPress and the Divi editor, I can access the code of my website and edit it with the built in text editor. These two editors are organized differently, WordPress organizes by function while Divi organizes by section.wordpress text editor

      The Wix Backend

I was shown the marketplace, contact list and SEO tools. The Wix dashboard and all these tools are very exhaustive.

The Wix editor, while is has its similarities to the Divi Visual Builder, has a lot more options avaliable. All the options or neatly organized with visual representations to show how they will look when selected. The editor is also extremely exhastive.

      Blog Page

To start a blog in WordPress, you first make a blog page titled "Blog". You then navigate on the WordPress dashboard to Appearance, then Customize, then Home Page Settings, then scroll down to Add a New Page and select the Blog option. I have learned the importance of creating blog content. Google and other search engines will see that the page is being updated with new content and index it more often.

      Your Title Goes Here

There are lots of tools out there to help a small business reach their customers and advertise their services. Mr. Oates showed me the tools he uses, Wix, Milanote and Brevo. Wix has a lot of tools built including an email list, a marketplace for new plugins and some light SEO. Milanote is an organization app that has a huge amount of options and premade templates that can help anyone, not just businesses. Lastly, Brevo is a CRM site that can be used to automate emails and advertisements for your business.
